Bill Hipgrave
I originally trained as an engineer at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, specialising in the nuclear and health physics fields. I joined Vertec’s Service Department in 1985, predominantly because of my health physics background. After just one year I was promoted to Technical Manager and in this role I built up the Service Department, assisting Vertec to gain a reputation for outstanding support within our field.
In 1998 I became General Manager, taking on a more comprehensive role within all segments of the business, not just the Technical Department. Following the retirement of the Company's founder in 2000, I was appointed Managing Director.
I am proud of the fact that, under my stewardship, the Company has built upon its earlier accomplishments and become the most successful supplier of central DEXA systems (x-ray scanners that check the density of the bones for osteoporosis) in the UK, as well as a respected supplier of high quality niche medical and scientific products. In 2006 we opened an office in South Africa, employing nearly 20 people, and enhancing our contribution to the Acal group.
Vertec is a small company, so teamwork is very important to us. We have built a culture where we work hard but also have fun. Our way of working is to build and nurture long term relationships with our customers and suppliers never forgetting that, being small, we have to be the best in our field.
